For many vegetarians, going vegan is the next logical step. This was the case for Rajajee, who’s known for singing with Crystal Fighters.
We caught up with the artist and spoke with her about the health benefits that have come with her decision to give up eggs and dairy products.
“I was actually brought up as a vegetarian, so I kind of was fortunate to be brought up respecting animals”, says Rajajee. “Since giving up dairy, I feel a lot lighter. I feel less lethargic. My digestion is better.”
She also reassures any sceptics that going vegan doesn’t mean giving up your favourite dishes. “I’ve never had so much fun making food, and I’ve never had so much fun eating it”, she says.
Just like meat, eggs and dairy products contribute to animal suffering. On dairy farms, cows are intensely confined and endure desperately unhappy lives. Treated only as milk-producing machines, cows are genetically manipulated and regularly injected with antibiotics and hormones. Their calves are taken away from them when they are just 1 day old so the milk that was meant for them can be sold to people instead. And humans’ taste for eggs means that millions of birds must spend their entire lives inside cramped cages, never able to stretch their wings, breathe fresh air or feel the warmth of the sun on their backs. They are forced to lay eggs every day until they’re finally sent to slaughter.
Fortunately, there are plenty of vegan cheeses and milks. In the video, Rajajee even shares her favourite vegan cheese recipe. Why not try a vegan diet for yourself?
